With 40 years of international experience training a wide range of animals—from dolphins and sea lions to dogs, cats, and now returning to horses—I have dedicated my life to humane, science-based training that honors the intelligence and emotions of every creature. My equestrian journey began at age nine under the tutelage of the British Horse Society, the gold standard in horse training. But in the 1960s and ‘70s, aversive methods—harsh bits, spurs, and whips—were the norm. As a young rider, I felt the suffering of the horses deeply, and though I pursued the British Horse Society’s Assistant Instructor program, I could not reconcile my love for animals with the forceful techniques I was expected to use.

So, I walked away.

For decades, I worked with other species, mastering positive reinforcement and operant conditioning—the same methods used to train dolphins and dogs. Now, I’ve come full circle to apply these gentle, effective techniques to horse training.
